National minimum wage and statutory payments increased this month, meaning employers need to check that they are complying with the statutory provisions and paying their workers the correct amount in line with the following increases.

National Minimum Wage

The new minimum rates of pay which came into effect on 01 April 2023 are as follows:

  • 23 and over £10.42 per hour (previously £9.50)
  • 21 to 22 year olds £10.18 per hour (previously £9.18)
  • 18 to 20 year olds £7.49 per hour (previously £6.83)
  • 16 to 17 year olds £5.28 per hour (previously £4.81)
  • apprentice rate £5.28 per hour (previously £4.81)

Statutory Pay

Statutory maternity, paternity, shared parental and adoption pay increased from £156.66 to £172.48 per week from 02 April 2023.

On 06 April 2023 statutory sick pay increased from £99.35 to £109.40 per week. 

Redundancy Pay

The cap for weekly pay when calculating redundancy pay also increased from £571 to £643 with effect from 06 April 2023.
